ROCK CLIMBING IN INDEX, WA

Photos by: Scott Welch; Scottclimbs@yahoo.com

Midway between Seattle and Leavenworth lives the sweeping, fine-grained granite of Index, WA. Known to the avid climbers of the world as “the crag”. A small Cascades backwater, yet one of the most infamous climbing venues in America. The climbing consists of a collection of walls and crags rising out of the glacially carved forested hillside. The granite provides a wide variety of challenging routes and is not a place where beginners can linger long. Index is known historically as a place to train enjoy difficult cracks and take a ride on solid aid-climbing. However, in addition to cracks, there are several balancy face climbs. The routes range from shorter, single-pitch routes to long 500'-high walls. When you are not climbing, the small mountain town of Index, is a picturesque place to relax, hanging out near the river, and Adventure Center for a brew. This venue is perfect for the person trying to get a solid day of climbing in close to home, or the person looking to practice more challenging crack climbing and longer aid routes in preparation in venues like Yosemite and hard rock routes in the alpine.

Index WA- Known to climbers as “the crag”. Coveted by local, avid climbers or any climber looking to progress. Anyone can climb the solid granite of Index, and for a day or two have a great time. If you “keep” climbing at Index, you will be forced to improve, or alternatively just stop climbing here. Photo: Scott Welch
