THE '“LEARNING GROUP”
***currently unavailable***
The Learning Group will spend their days mastering core movement skills for efficient backcountry touring. Tours will be planned around terrain that facilitates the use of a variety of uphill and downhill movement skills. If you are an intermediate skier looking to hone your skills at a moderate pace, this is the group for you. Learning Group participants should have several seasons of inbound experience and should be able to comfortably link turns and enjoy “blue square” to “black diamond” runs in various conditions. Skiers and riders should be comfortable spending all day outdoors engaged in moderate to intensive cardiovascular activity including 2,500-4,000 vertical feet of ascent in a day. All participants must have some formal training with avalanche equipment (transceivers, probes, shovels).
The “Touring Group”
The Touring Group will spend their day seeking the best snow for the day’s conditions. Tours will be planned to get away from other skiers and riders, and find the best snow. If you are an advanced to expert skier looking to maximize your turns for the day, this is your group. Touring Group participants should be able to comfortably link turns and enjoy “black diamond” to “double-black” runs in various conditions including heavy powder, side slipping icy slopes, and jump turns in wind crusts. Skiers and riders should be comfortable spending all day outdoors engaged in moderate to intensive cardiovascular activity including 3,500-5,000 vertical feet of ascent in a day. All participants are expected to have some formal training with avalanche equipment (transceivers, probes, shovels).
For participants looking to refresh their avalanche rescue skills or for those that have never had formal avalanche training, The Mountain Bureau offers 1-day AIARE Avalanche Rescue Courses. These courses are scheduled to get you all ready to go before you head out with your touring group.
